Dr. Wayne F. Goins, University Distinguished Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies at Kansas State University will headline the 32nd annual Charlie Christian International Music Festival at the Embassy Suites, 741 N. Phillips on Saturday, June 3rd.
Goins has performed with such greats as legendary guitarist Kenny Burrell, alto saxophonist Bobby Watson, trumpeter Clark Terry, tenor saxophonist Joe Lovano, organist Jimmy McGriff and many others. He completed his PhD. at Florida State University. Wayne is the founder of Little Apple Records, his independent jazz label that has released six albums featuring him in guitar performance: Chronicles of Carmela, West Coast Swing, , Standard Fare, Smokin’ at the Oak Bar, Bluesin’ With the B3, and Home…Cookin! Goins produced the latest CD release on his Little Apple Records label, Last Call by Rick Smith, who serves as the second guitarist in Goins’ della Voce Quartet.
Mark Temple, festival chairman, noted that Wayne is an author of several books including A Biography of Charlie Christian: Jazz Guitar’s King of Swing (2005) published by the Edwin Mellen Press. Temple said this year’s festival will cover two days of great music, dance, fun, food and so much more. Friday June 2nd is the date for the traditional Jam Session, an event that invites any musician or vocalist to join the band on stage to showcase their talents. This year’s Jam Session will include feature artist, saxophonist Eldredge Jackson who will play with the house band. Tulsa native Jackson is a favorite of the festival and Oklahoma City.
